Diversity Visa Lottery Opens for 2018 - Registration Ends November 7, 2016


The United States Department of State released a public notice on September 16, 2016 providing information on how to apply for the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program for 2018 (DV-2018).

OVERVIEW:

"Diveristy immigrants" are foreigners from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. 50,000 diversity visas (DVs) will be available for the fiscal year of 2018. No single country may receive more than 7% of the available DVs in any one year.

ELIGIBILITY:

If an immigrant is from one of the following countries, (s)he is not eligible to apply for DV-2018 because more than 50,000 natives of these countries have immigrated to the United States within the past five years:

  • Bangladesh

  • Brazil

  • Canada

  • China (mainland-born)

  • Colombia

  • Dominican Republic

  • El Salvador

  • Haiti

  • India

  • Jamaica

  • Mexico

  • Nigeria

  • Pakistan

  • Peru

  • Phillipines

  • South Korea

  • United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories

  • Vietnam

*Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan are eligible. And Ecuador is now eligible.

ENTRY:

Requirement #1: Be born in a qualifying country, enter with a spouse from a qualifying country, or claim the qualifying country of one of your parents if they were not born or legally residing in the non-qualifying country at the time of your birth.

Requirement #2: Meet the education/work experience requirement of the DV program by having either a high-school education (12 years of schooling completed) or two years work experience within the last five years.

Entry Period: All applicants must submit their entries between Tuesday, October 4, 2016 and Monday, November 7, 2016. Each person is allowed only one entry per applicant. If an individual submits more than one entry they will be disqualified from the lottery entirely.

Electronic Entries: Applicants can submit their electronic entries online at dvlottery.state.gov. U.S. DHS suggests that individuals fill out their own applications without the help of any outside sources. There is no cost to register for the Diversity Program.
